William Pinder, Jr.

Pinder, Jr., William C., age 83, passed away Tuesday, July 8th at St. Thomas Hospital as a result of a stroke. Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Marie Smith Pinder and his son, Donald Wayne Pinder. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Maria Pinder of Dover, Tennessee and his daughter and son-in-law, Rose Marie and Bill Haire and grandsons Jonathan and Joshua Haire of Franklin, Tennessee; brothers Robert Pinder of Georgetown, Texas and Walter Pinder of Jesup, Georgia. He was graduated from the Coast Guard Academy and served during World War II, received his Master's Degree from Columbia University and met his wife while working on his Ph.D. at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a member of the Society of Actuaries and retired as Vice President of the Actuarial Department at National Life Insurance Company in 1981. He was an avid golfer, loved to play tennis, bridge and ping-pong. He and his wife were surrogate parents to many area college students. He was a great encourager and served as "Granddaddy" to many, many people. His greatest joy was to be involved in the lives of his own children and grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:30 PM on Friday, July 11th at West Harpeth Funeral Home with a memorial service immediately following. Revs. Dan Scott, Jeff Dollar and Johnny Polk will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Maria Pinder cancer fund at Regions Bank, 705 Donelson Pkwy, Dover, TN 37058 or to Global Foundation, P. O. Box 58328, Nashville, TN 37205.
