Steven John Balser, 74 of Goodlettsville, TN and formerly a longtime New York State resident, passed away Wednesday June 1, 2022, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN. Born in Cleveland, OH, June 16, 1947, Steven was the son of the late Sylvester J. Balser and Helen Strub Balser. Steven was an electrical engineer spending the first 30 years of his career working for Power Technologies, Inc. where he eventually led the organization as President. He finished his career doing what he loved most, working as a consultant for Black and Veatch and teaching an engineering course he designed for Union College in Schenectady, NY. Throughout his career he traveled extensively around the world working in six of the seven continents. He received his bachelor’s degree, masters’ degree, and PhD from Purdue University in Indiana and later received a second masters’ degree in business from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. Steven was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. He enjoyed bicycling, backpacking, kayaking and travelling. In addition to his hobbies, Steven loved to coach his children’s sports teams and mentored youth through the Kids Hope program. He and his wife of 51 years, Kathie Balser, enjoyed a retirement trip where they spent a month hiking 500 miles across Northern Spain on the Camino de Santiago. Steven was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather (also known as Pappy), and brother. He is survived by his wife, Kathie; two sons, Zachary Steven Balser (Lindsey), and Benjamin Alexander Balser (Brandy); four grandchildren, Ava, Brady, Scarlett, and Ruby; his sister, Carol Holden (Steven); his niece, Elizabeth Holden (Jesse); his great-nephew, Elliott, and great-niece Adelaide. A celebration of Steven’s life will be held at a later date.
