Shirley Evelyn (Howell) Griffin Jones, 73, died Tuesday, July 16, 2019. Born on June 25, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Loren Bedford Howell and Alice Mai (Purcell) Howell. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Wayne Jones, and two brothers, Jahue Loren Howell and Ruby Lyle "R.L." Howell. A 1964 graduate of Goodlettsville High School, she retired from Atwood Industries in Greenbrier where she was the office manager and accountant for more than 30 years. A devoted sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Shirley loved watching all sports, but especially enjoyed attending her grandson's ball games. She loved baseball and basketball, and was an avid follower of "March Madness" who often participated in the tournament bracket pool. Shirley enjoyed shopping with her sister and friends, and loved to cook for her family. Her biscuits and cornbread were award-winning and her chocolate pie, banana pudding and dumplings will never be forgotten. Shirley is survived by her sons, Robert A. "Andy" Griffin II and James C. "Kris" Griffin and his wife Carolyn; five grandchildren, Noah A. Griffin, Courtney Helms and her husband Kaelin, Kayla Harkins and her husband Ken, Christopher Griffin, and Kory Griffin; two great-grandchildren, Kallen and Kaleb Helms; her sister and brother-in-law, Joyce H. and Leo Smiley; step-son, Glenn D. Jones; loving nieces and nephews, Leo Smiley II, Leiott Smiley, Bob Howell, Vicky Howell Graves and Jay Howell; and loyal friend Debbie Dowlen.
Visitation will be Saturday, July 27, at Highland Chapel Union Church from 10 a.m. until noon. A service celebrating her life will start at noon, followed by a luncheon. Highland Chapel Union Church is located at 1122 Highland Ave., Goodlettsville (Ridgetop), TN. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to your desired charity or Highland Chapel Union Church. Arrangements entrusted to Cole & Garrett Funeral Home, Goodlettsville, TN.
