Lillian Marie Brinkley, affectionately known as Lillie, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 5, 2025, in Lebanon, Tennessee, at the age of 87. Born on July 20, 1937, in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, she was the beloved daughter of the late Odie Johnson and Jannie Reed Johnson.
Lillie was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Benny Brinkley; her children, Glenda Lynette Brinkley and Timothy Dee Brinkley; her sister, Lucy Davenport; and her brothers, Johnny Duncan, Odie Johnson Jr., Frankie Johnson, and Jimmie Johnson.
Lillie’s family fondly remembers her insistence on being called “Lillie” by each of her grandchildren, as she famously declared, even as the years went by, that she was “too young to be called grandmother”. Her great-grandchildren affectionately adapted this tradition and called her “Grillie,” a nickname that she heartily adopted. Lillie took great pride in her family and was known for her nurturing spirit, unwavering love, and ability to crack a joke at a moment's notice. She was a devoted grandmother to her cherished grandchildren: Lauren Brinkley-Rubinstein (Eric), Matthew Brinkley (Charlotte), and Kattie Brinkley-Rice (Jordan) and extended this love to her daughter-in-law Patty Brinkley. Her great-grandchildren, those who lovingly knew her as Grillie—Xavier, Jaxon, and Connor—brought her endless joy, filling her days with laughter and light. In addition, Lillie's special bond with her sister, Jean Horner, was a testament to her enduring love and loyalty.
Family and friends are invited to honor Lillian’s life during a visitation on Monday, January 13, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM at Cole & Garrett Funeral Home in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 1:30 PM, officiated by Pastor Jerry Ladd, at the same location. This gathering will be a time to share stories, celebrate her enduring legacy, and remember the remarkable woman who touched so many lives.
Lillie will be laid to rest at Hillcrest Municipal Cemetery in White House, Tennessee. Serving as pallbearers are Matt Brinkley, Jaxon Rice, Xavier Rubinstein, Craig Johnson, Dee Johnson, and Mark Reid.
Lillian Marie Brinkley leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and kindness that will forever be cherished by all who knew her.
