It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Robert Evans, Jr., on January 19, 2024, in Brentwood, Tennessee. John was born on October 22, 1945, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to the late John R. Evans, Sr., and the late Lorraine Lowry Evans. John leaves behind a legacy of kindness and generosity that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A graduate of Isaac Litton High School, class of 1963, John continued his education at the University of Tennessee at Nashville.
Following his passion for service, at age 18, John embarked on a remarkable military career in the Tennessee Army National Guard. Over an astonishing span of 51 years, he dedicated himself to protecting and serving his country. Beginning as a field medic and later becoming a recruiter, John's leadership, creativity, skill set, and love for his job led him to become the director of Visual Information Support before retiring from the Public Affairs Office.
As a recruiter, John demonstrated his unique ability to connect with young people by organizing Friday night high school dances that even led to street dances throughout east Tennessee. It was during those events that he showcased not only his recruiting talents but also his ability to bring joy into people's lives. His selflessness and dedication were an inspiration to all who served alongside him.
Beyond his military career, John possessed numerous hobbies and interests that brought him joy. He had an exceptional talent for woodworking and was known for his ability to tear down and rebuild anything that crossed his path. His craftsmanship left a lasting mark and serves as a testament to his dedication to excellence.
But it was not just skills that defined John Evans; his generous, kind-hearted nature set him apart from others. He was a man who committed random acts of kindness everywhere he went, addressing every need he saw and then some: he bought meals for soldiers and first responders, equipment for athletic teams, clothes for children, chairs for a choir loft, food for anybody in need and sometimes for people who weren’t. In the spirit of the Biblical mandate to do unto others, John and his wife of almost 36 years, Freda, took seriously the idea of sharing their blessings for the sheer joy of sharing. He loved to do for others. He possessed a spirit of generosity that touched the lives of countless individuals.
John's family and friends held a special place in his heart. He was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of sons Keith and Kerry, Sharon Anne Boguskie; his sister Bobbie Evans Harris; his parents and, after the death of his mother, his step-mother, Cecelia Asmus Evans. He is survived by his loving wife, Freda Blankenship Evans, who stood by his side through thick and thin. His sons Kerry Evans (Emily), Keith Evans (Bethany), and Matt King (Trisha) brought immeasurable joy to his life. His grandchildren Reed Evans, Connor Evans, Bella King, Olivia Evans, and Anna Kate Evans will forever cherish the memories they shared with their beloved grandfather. He will also be dearly missed by his nephews John I. Harris (Laura), Robert E. Harris (Dawne), and N. Evan Harris. In addition, John is also survived by his constant companion, Puff.
John Robert Evans, Jr., leaves behind a legacy of kindness and service to glorify God. His memory will forever be engraved in the hearts of those he touched.
