Helen Smith

Helen Louise Smith, 79, of Ridgetop passed away Monday, October 4, 2021 at her home. Born August 12, 1942 in Goodlettsville, she was the daughter of the late J.B. Brown and Ona Phillips Brown Russell. Helen was also preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Lyle Smith, Jr.; her step-father, Arthur Russell; and her siblings, Vicky Barksdale (Vernon), Steve Russell (Carolyn) and Vernon Russell. Helen graduated from Goodlettsville High School with the class of 1960. She later received her bachelor’s degree from Lipscomb University. Prior to raising her family, Helen taught at public schools in Indiana and northern Virginia. She returned to TN in 2000. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She also possessed a strong faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In recent years she had volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Helen is survived by her children, Penny Gajan (Richard), Julia Smith, and Bernie Smith (Misty); four grandchildren, Jacob, Lyla, Kyra and Kelsey; nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends. Visitation will be held at Cole & Garrett Funeral Home, Goodlettsville, Friday from 12 noon until 2 pm. A Life Celebration service will follow the visitation at 2 PM with interment at Beech Cemetery, Hendersonville.
