Harold Bowden

November 5, 1931 — January 25, 2022

Goodlettsville

Harold  Carlton Bowden, Jr (November 5, 1931 – January 25, 2022) grew up in Durham, North Carolina, and he graduated from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill (where he played basketball) in 1955 with a Masters of Business Administration (as well as an undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Industrial Relations). He spent his entire working life with DuPont and retired in 1992 after 37 years. Hal’s greatest passion was horses. At one point he was the Vice President of the NWHA (National Walking Horse Association). He was a member of PWHAT (Pleasure Walking Horse Association of Tennessee), and TWHBEA (Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association - Board of Directors).

Hal is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Martha Givens Bowden, and his sister, Helen Jane Idol. His children are: Carl Bowden (Maxine, deceased), David Bowden (Sharon), Keith Bowden (Bob), Mary Hester, Ann Sanders (Rhett), Olivia Swallows, and step children: Glen Bloodworth (Dodie), and Kathy Bloodworth. He has twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Hal was a member in good standing with the Freemasons in Beech number 240, Hendersonville, TN as well as a valued member (32°) of the Scottish Rite Free Masonry (Valley of Nashville).

The thing that energized Hal the most in his later years was Unbridled Changes at Montgomery Hollow. The compassionate staff at Unbridled Changes is committed to helping all individuals through EAGALA, equine assisted therapy and learning. Typical sessions involve the client, horses, and their team performing various ground work activities and exercises. They provide a comfortable, fun environment that takes traditional therapy out of the office and makes a lasting and positive impact on all who participate. Hal loved seeing the positive impact the horses and farm could have on people suffering from traumatic life experiences.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, February 6, 2022, at Cole & Garrett Funeral Home (127 N. Main Street, Goodlettsville, TN). Visitation will be two hours before the Service at 1:00 p.m.
