Dorothy Mcmurtry

Dorothy W. McMurtry passed quietly on Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Canton Nursing Center, Canton, GA with family at her side. She was 87 years young.

She is survived by 3 of her 4 children: daughter, Sherry M. Clark of Canton, GA; son, Ronald W. McMurtry of Morristown, Tn; and son Walter P. McMurtry of Woodbridge, VA.; 5 grandchildren Kirstie Lisa Messimer, Mendy Dawn McMurtry, Mark McMurtry, Margaret Anne McMurtry, and Jeffrey McMurtry; 1 step grandchild; 3 great grandchildren Ashley Messimer, Sierra Messimer, and Royal Philo. Her oldest son, Jerry R. McMurtry, passed in 1963 at the age of 18.

Ms. McMurtry was born Dorothy Marvine Webb in White House, TN on February 10, 1927, to Essie Dora Jackson Webb and Thomas Leonard Webb. She was the 4th of 5 children. In 1944, she married Walter McMurtry, USAF. They lived in Tennessee, Texas and California, finally settling in West Palm Beach, FL with their 4 children. Ms. McMurtry began her 26 year career with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in 1961. After retiring, she lived quietly in Florida until her illness forced her to move closer to family in Georgia. Smiling and laughing through it all, she was a lovely person and a favorite with all she met. She will be missed.

The family will receive friends from 11am-1pm Monday at the Cole & Garrett Funeral Home, 127 N. Main Street, Goodlettsvile, TN 37072. Funeral services will be conducted at 1pm Monday in the funeral home chapel with burial to follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in White House, TN.
