Shields, Sr., Ben P. Age ninety-one, died July 25, 2009 after an extended illness. Born in Chickamauga, Georgia, he graduated from Lee High as class valedictorian. He then attended University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, where he was a campus leader, member of various honor clubs and student body president. He worked as an agent for the Nat'l Life and Acc. Ins Co. where he held many positions, retiring as Vice President and Agency Secretary. His career was interrupted by 3 1/2 yrs of World War II service, entering as a private and discharged as a captain. His hobbies included hunting and golf. For many years he was a member of the Nashville also Mid-TN Seniors Golf Association. Also, he went pheasant hunting in South Dakota for more than 50 years. He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Maxine Ene Shields, his son and daughter-in-law, Ben Shields Jr. Barbara, and granddaughter, Ashley Shields--all of Nashville; daughter, Shelly Anne Shields of Costa Mesa, CA. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, and Pathfinders Sunday school class, Brentwood Country Club, and Nashville Elks Lodge Life Member. Pallbearers are: Ellis Goodloe, Steve Yokley, Greg Reichert, Ed Zeagler, Ed Schoenberger, and Gerald Smith. Visitation will be at Calvary United Methodist Church from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Tuesday, July 28th. Burial will be held at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens at 9:00 AM Wednesday with a Celebration of Life to follow at 10:30 AM at Calvary United Methodist Church, with the Rev Peter Van Eys officiating. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested donations be made to Calvary Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Nashville Humane Society or Friends of Cumberland Heights.
